Views From Our Custom Cabinet Shop

Hello Everyone,

We hope that you had an enjoyed your summers filled with sun, fun, family and friends.  During the summer months probably noticed that we haven’t been posting for some time and are wondering how team Superior has been spending their summer.  Well, we have been extremely busy servicing our clients, designing new projects, our cabinetmakers and finishers have been handcrafting beautiful cabinetry and installing many projects.  Our recent travels have taken us to many locations on the east coast – from  Massachusetts, Connecticut, New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania to Florida.  As you can see this busy schedule hasn’t allowed us a lot of time to post and we are sorry that we disappointed many followers by not posting more often.  Well, stayed tuned as we are about to catch up with our activity.  Look for some upcoming posts as we will be sharing designs of upcoming projects, some photo from the field and completed projects.  Today we have included some photos from our custom cabinet shop.  Today we will share some projects that are not as common and demonstrate the skills and diverse talents of our team.

Reclaimed Beams Become Family Heirloom

The first project was an honor to build.  A long time family client asked us to mill some barn beams taken from their family farm and handcraft a dining room table.  This special table was created for family events and celebrations with multiple generations gathering around a piece of family history.  It is so rewarding to be able to provide a family with a piece of furniture that spans generations and to give new life to wood that first harvested well over 120 years ago.  When working on such a project you feel a certain connection to the timbermen who harvested the tree, milled it into a beam and placed it into service over a century ago. You reflect upon the barn and the families it served for many generations. And, you get to witness the joy it brings to its current custodians.  This is just one of the rewarding experiences our team gets to enjoy every day.

Carved White Credenza by Superior Woodcraft

The second project is very different from the farm table.  The white carved credenza with a high gloss top takes a leap forward a few hundred years.  This unique piece with deeply carved designs provides a very interesting appearance.  From afar the finish appears to be a design in two colors, but upon closer inspection you noticed the surface is carved and the peaks and valleys create shadows.  A piece of this nature is very interesting as the appearance will change with different lighting and when viewed from different angles.  Contrasting this piece against the farm table handcrafted from reclaimed barn beams is a true testament to the talents of Superior’s artisans.

Our third and final project today is highlighting a very elegant work with a high gloss finished coat on walnut, high gloss metal that is a fine mesh screen with a diamond lattice used as the center insert on the doors.  As you can see from these examples Superior Woodcraft is a true custom cabinetmaker who is able to handcraft custom cabinetry to meet your unique needs and desires.

Custom Burmese Teak Kitchen – Princeton NJ 08540

On behalf of the entire team at Superior Woodcraft, Inc, we are proud to share this article featured in Design NJ magazine. Working in conjunction with Lasley Brahaney Architechture + Construction is always a wonderful experience, and this featured project proves that the fruits of our collective labor produces a jaw dropping finished product for our clients.

Superior Woodcraft, Inc. manufactured and engineered the kitchen into this amazing home design, featuring Natural Burmese Teak to match the wood throughout the home.  The hideaway kitchen includes doors that can either fully conceal the kitchen perimeter, or fully pocket into the stunning wall surround to reveal cabinetry and storage galore, as well as fully integrated Sub-Zero refrigeration units.

Our dedicated and talented team worked with the builder and client to make a cohesive living experience with a full scope and vision that included a variety of materials and professionals.  All of the doors had to be pre-engineered by our team to fully align with a straight and continuous line of tongue and groove that extended all the way throughout the interior of the home and beyond to the exterior walls. There was no room for error, and we are beyond proud to have been selected for our part in this incredible project.

It is always a pleasure to work with Lasley Brahaney Architechture + Construction

Transformation of West Chester Home – 19380

Guest blogger Kat Robbins of Kat Robbins Interiors documented the transformation of a dated kitchen into a current modern day gem.  This fantastic project was the mixture of the best ingredients provided by Kat Robbins Interiors (Wayne,Pa), Hazley Builders (West Chester, PA) and Superior Woodcraft (Doylestown, PA).  Please welcome and join Kat as she guides us through the transformation of this West Chester kitchen.

What a Difference! (Before/Afters)

Everybody loves a good BEFORE and AFTER! It seems like magic to see an outdated, poorly designed room transform into a jaw dropping space. It’s not magic and takes a whole lot of planning, work and detailed execution, but it’s SO satisfying to complete a project and be able to share it with the world.

This West Chester kitchen was only about 14 years old, but it looks straight out of the 90s. Dated finishes, weird details and a relatively small island given the scale of the room.

Our clients wanted a bright, modern space with lots of glamorous, up-to-date finishes.

Check out how things turned out!

West Chester Kitchen

Before Image of Existing Kitchen

Even though we still used painted and wood finishes, there’s no resemblance to the original kitchen. Beautifully grained walnut is the star on the oven wall. High gloss painted white cabinets on the island and right side brighten up the space considerably.

We used a rare Calcutta marble on the larger island for a luxurious feel. Eliminating the corner cabinet to the right of the range opened up the space and allowed the window to be enlarged. We mixed up the lighted cabinets by using gold leaf paint in the walnut side ones.

Bar Area  – Before Photo Top Left & Post Transformation Top Right and Bottom Photos

Ok, wow! What a difference, indeed. Bright lighted cabinets highlight our client’s collection of glassware. At the far end, pocket doors reveal a hidden bar. Antique mirrored glass adds some warmth to the backsplash wall.

Before and After Views of Open Floor Plan – What A Difference

Light and bright was the goal in this renovation. Clean lines and no clutter help keep the room peaceful, while the plants bring life and color. Some more storage was added to the dining room side of the cabinets for entertaining needs. Concrete counter tops on the kitchen perimeter make the design more interesting and keeps the island feeling like the super star it definitely is.

Old vs New – A World of Difference

Before ViewSuperior Woodcraft After View

Aside from being made from a stunning piece of natural stone, the island is larger, providing more seating and additional prep area. The faucet at the end serves up boiling hot water, filtered still water, and sparking water, too!

Dated Design – Contemporary Post Transformation

The fireplace surround was B O R I N G and resembled every other center hall colonial. The area was widened, large scale porcelain tile was added, and a rustic mantle keeps it feeling warm and inviting. The clients loved the concrete counter tops so much that they asked to use it on the hearth as well. The new hearth wraps around on the right, providing a space to display accessories, seating for parties or just cozying up to the fire.

We absolutely loved these clients, whose sophisticated tastes and modern aesthetic made this project very rewarding. Working with Hazley Builders (West Chester, PA) and Superior Woodcraft (Doylestown, PA) was icing on the cake. Collaborating as a team with clients, builder and vendors means a successful renovation that all of us are proud of.

If you are thinking of remodeling your kitchen, we hope you think of us to help you!

American Chestnut – If Wood Could Talk

At Superior Woodcraft our craftsmen recently completed a project that was placed on hold due to the Covid-19 pandemic.  The pandemic made me think  really think and appreciate this commissioned project; coming upon the celebration of America’s independence on July 4th also turned my thoughts back to this project.  Why was this single project resurfacing in my mind so much?  Well, the wood used for this project is special because we had the privileged of handcrafting reclaimed American Chestnut into fine custom cabinetry that will continue to provide beauty and utility for a family for many years to come.

American Chestnut

At first glance it might not sound so special, but as the pandemic set in one thought about this history making event. A type of event that very few of us have ever experienced.  Working and shaping American Chestnut makes one think about the history that wood has witnessed.  First, this tree was harvested at least 100 years ago.  Next, american chestnut trees lived to be 500 years old.  It is very likely that this very chestnut wood that Superior’s craftsmen shaped into a new form first sprouted from the earth before America was even a nation.  For simplicity sake  just assume that this particular chestnut tree first sprouted about 200 years ago.

So what history did this tree witness?

1820 – There were 22 states in the union

1861 – American Civil War

1879 – Long lasting light bulb invented – now LED

1900 – US population exceeds 75 million – 2020 – 330 million

1917-18 – WWI and Spanish Flu

1930s – Depression

1940s – WWII

1969 – Moon Landing

1976 – Apple Computer was formed

1990s – 2g cell service

2020 – Covid-19

These are just a few of the major events that occurred since  50% carbon, 42% oxygen, 6% hydrogen, 1% nitrogen, and 1% other elements came together to create this chestnut wood.  Most likely this wood saw the birth of our nation and every 4th of July celebration ever since.  Now, Superior Woodcraft’s craftsmen extend the life of this wood, which will bring beauty, pleasure and utility to a family’s home.

Reflection on the Past Life of our medium – Chestnut Wood

As a craftsman laying hands on this wood you can’t help to think that you are touching history.  You think about the loggers who felled the tree by hand, the horses and mules that pulled that log from the forest, the sawmill that created boards and beams for a barn to house livestock that supported a family. And now, we shape that same wood into fine handcrafted cabinetry.

Perspective From a Chestnut Tree

Covid-19 – a current disaster and hardship.  It’s just one small notable blip in history.  A Superior Woodcraft craftsman in 2020?  Just one few craftsmen from a line of many over the generations that touched this wood over the past centuries.  This special wood humbles us and puts the current events of 2020 into perspective. One day history will simply look back at Covid-19 as just one of thousands of notable points in our history and the craftsmen who created these custom cabinets made of chestnut as just a few of the people who interacted with that wood over the last several hundred years.  It makes you realize that just as this chestnut wood endured for hundreds of years; 2020 will become 2021; today’s events will soon be history and we too will endure, survive and grow in the future – just as this american chestnut wood has done.

We hope that you enjoyed the photos of Superior Woodcraft’s custom american chestnut cabinetry and the humble insights that this wood has provided.  Have a safe and happy 4th of July celebration. Stay well friends.

Note: To learn more about the american chestnut and modern efforts to revive the species check out The American Chestnut Foundation.

Superior Woodcraft Delivers Harmony – Vermont 802

Vermont

Beautiful Vermont Custom Kitchen in Farm House

In our last two posts we saw how Superior Woodcraft Delivers Beauty and how Superior Woodcraft Delivers Utility.  In our final post on this lovely Vermont custom kitchen Superior Delivers Harmony.  The path to achieving harmony is the successful melding of the elements – beauty and utility.  When this is achieved a higher level of harmony can be achieved.

“Have nothing in your houses that you do not know to be useful, or believe to be beautiful.” Wm Morris

Having rooms in your home that you believe to be beautiful can bring joy and pleasure into your life each day.  However, if this space is not functional or lacks utility then the  perceived beauty of the room quickly fades and turns into frustration and daily disdain.  It becomes a space that you would rather  avoid as it brings neither joy nor improves your daily life.

Meaningful Utility Amplifies Beauty

Superior Woodcraft

Maximizing Utility

A well functioning room with ample utility will increase the beauty and pleasure of living in that space every day.   Every day tasks are made easier and can be performed well resulting in an improved outcome.  All of which allows the beauty of the room to be enjoyed more easily and appreciated by the user.  This positive productive energy is transferred into the work that is accomplish in this space and unto other members of the household.  This magnifies the positive feelings generated from the space and is reinforced by other inhabitants to create a feeling of harmony among both our environment and our family members and close friends.  Successfully blending beauty and  utility creates harmony.  This allow us to live a higher level of living with a more enriched and fulfilled life each day.

Harmony Achieved

In our beautiful Vermont kitchen we saw how beauty of the space compliments the natural settings of the Green Mountains and the character of the old farm house.  This custom kitchen was packed with utility, but not overdone to become a hindrance and degradation of the space.  The increased utility for this owner amplified the simple beauty of the custom cabinetry and design.  The achievement of this of this project is best describe by the owner , Debralyn Stempel, “Being able to organize the kitchen and having everything in its place makes cooking much easier. There is no more rummaging around trying to figure out where is that thing that I need.  My new kitchen organization has made food preparation in these stressful times a much more enjoyable experience.” Harmony achieved.

A special thank you to Mr. and Mrs. Stempel for commissioning Superior Woodcraft to design and handcraft a beautiful and useful custom kitchen.  We wish you and your family and friends many years of enjoyment with your Superior Woodcraft Custom Cabinetry.

Tips to Prepare Your Home for Winter

Another year has flown by and here we are again, approaching winter. The Farmer’s Almanac is predicting a “wet and wild” winter for us here in the Northeast. So what can you do to make sure your home and garden are prepared?

Here are a few basic tips that can help:

Indoors:

  • Have your furnace tuned-up and schedule a chimney cleaning.
  • Clean your dryer vents.
  • Make sure storm doors and windows are in place.
  • Use heat shrinkable plastic to cover any drafty windows and glass doors.
  • Use plastic to close off any outside air conditioning units; if you have window units, remove them and seal the windows.
  • Make sure fireplace dampers are closed when not in use.
  • Consider using programmable thermostats to save energy. There are so many neat options out there nowadays that turn your home into a smart home.

  • Check on the level of insulation and weather stripping – maybe replacements or more is required. Investing in insulation, caulk, weatherstripping and plastic to reduce air leaks is the best investment you can possibly make.  Once you are done, check for air leaks again and repeat until you are satisfied.
  • Since you are sealing off fresh air it is also a good time to check the batteries on your carbon monoxide and smoke detectors.
  • Consider investing in a Home Energy Audit which uses a blower door test and thermal camera to check your home’s efficiency. Make sure your audit is completed by a qualified home energy audit or check with your utility company to see if they provide free assessments. This audit could pay you dividends by the end of the winter.

Be the wise, safe, more comfortable and sustainable investor this winter by doing these few simple steps to avoid having your money blow through the chimney or leaky windows and doors. You will not be disappointed in the results.

Outside

  • Remove fallen leaves, sticks and debris from your roof, gutters, down spouts and drains so water can be properly channeled away from your home.  This will help avoid some costly problems when winter arrives.
  • Trim your trees and shrubs – trim off any dead to help prevent diseases.
  • Turn off outdoor water faucets – you do not want an icy mess and a plumbing bill.
  • Check roof for any problem areas and debris and make repairs now.
  • Do a visual check of the outside of your home and look to see where air or critters could be coming in
  • Put away the grill and garden furniture, or invest in a good furniture cover. Or, if you are like me, make sure you can shovel a path to the grill for year-round grilling!
  • Check driveways, walkways, stairs and railings for damage to prevent injuries over the winter and to make shoveling easier.
  • Stock up on winter necessities, such as firewood, ice-melt (make sure it is pet friendly),  car and home emergency kits, ice scrapers, and have that snowblower serviced.
  • Finally, check the tire pressure on your car and anti-freeze levels.

Do these steps now before it gets too cold. Avoid having more problems and regrets at 3 am on the coldest night of winter while you are waiting for the heater repairman and the plumber to arrive for an emergency visit.

Stay warm and cozy!

Hello everyone.  It has been sometime since we have been able to post.  This summer was incredibly busy at Superior Woodcraft.  The Superior Team spent the summer traveling to job sites between Boston, Massachusetts and the South Jersey beaches.  Spending a lot of time on the road at active job sites doesn’t allow much time to post and some of the internet speeds in some locations is pretty darn slow.  Being back in Doylestown has allowed us to caught up on things around our studio, get back in touch with you and share some photos from the past summer.

One town we spent a lot of time in this summer has been Deal, New Jersey 07723.  We have been fortunate to be able to complete many interesting projects in Deal.  Here are some photos of one of the projects we completed a few months ago.

This custom kitchen by Superior Woodcraft features solid rift white oak cabinetry complemented by a Lacanche French Range.  This kitchen has a natural warmth and clean simple lines – a very comfortable and relaxing environment.

Today we find that our field trip to a Superior Woodcraft project keeps us local in our hometown of Doylestown, Pa.  It’s always nice to be home.   It was great working on this project with our long time friends at Happ Contractors.  Happ Contracting has been servicing Bucks County since 1928.  Not many companies can say that three generations of family members have been building homes for 91 years.  It is always a pleasure to work with Happ Contractors.  We are looking forward our next project together.

Photos From The Field – Deal, NJ 07723

We are back in Deal, NJ to check on another Superior Woodcraft installation.   We find two interesting and different custom cabinets during this field trip to this New Jersey beach town.  The first photo shows custom oak cabinetry with some bow ties and triangles.  These custom oak cabinets are simple with clean lines.  The interesting decorative elements with the bow ties and triangles are functional as well.   These elements are cut out of the wood and are used as finger pulls to open the doors and drawers.  A very simple, creative and aesthetically pleasing design.

High Gloss Custom Cabinetry

The next set up of Superior Woodcraft custom cabinetry has simple clean lines, but is in stark contrast to the white oak cabinetry above.   These cabinets are painted a high gloss gray.  The gloss level is so high it is almost a mirror finish.  Check out the reflections in the photos.  You can see the reflection of person who was working in the background.  Yes, Photos From the Field are photos from active Superior Woodcraft project sites.  While this photo won’t make a great glamour shot it definitely shows the high gloss level on these cabinets.
