Welcome back to our older home in Cranberry, New Jersey.  We hope that you enjoyed exploring the modern day closets in this older home.  If you are just joining us we are visiting a work site that is an older home being updated for modern living.

Just as our bathrooms and closets have changed over the past century, so have our kitchens.  In the past kitchens were relegated to the back of the home.  The convenience of modern day appliances didn’t exist, you shopped daily for fresh foods, had a very different diet and as we learned in the last post, 43% of our income was spent on food.

Today, we spend about 13% of our income on food and have access to foods from around the world. Modern refrigeration and cooking appliances have changed the way we live.  It has changed our kitchens as well.

Think about how much has changed in the past 100-150 years – indoor plumbing, electricity, refrigeration, we went from cooking with wood fire, to gas, to electricity, to microwaves and now to magnetic induction (cooking with magnets), which boils water in a fraction time compared to the other cooking methods.  The kitchen is no longer the hot, steamy, relatively dirty room in the back of the home where only the cook and helpers ventured.

Today’s modern kitchen is open to guests.  Guests join us for a glass of wine while we prepare the meal, talk about food and our lives.  Today, we think of the kitchen as the heart of the home where everyone gathers.  Compared to 100 years ago we spend much more time living and entertaining in our kitchens.  This creates new and different demands for this space.  The kitchen of the past was mostly utilitarian.  Today, the kitchen is filled with utility, but also it also needs to be beautiful, inviting, safe and spacious for guests.  When these elements are achieved in the kitchen you can achieve a harmonious environment for family and friends.
